Animals are my muse.
nature is my temple.

I’ve been doing a lot of gardening lately at various locations and it makes everytime an adventure! For example, last week I saw a strange creature flutterting about in the flowers. It moved like a hummingbird but it looked more like a bug; also it was much smaller than the hummingbirds I’m familiar with. It was too big to be a bee. After asking a friend, I HM photodiscovered it was a hummingbird moth! A what?! I’ve never heard of it before. It was exciting! I tried to gently catch it but it was too fast and I didn’t want to disturb it too much. I decided to try and get the best shot I could with my phone. It was so quick and only hovered for a second or two before fluttering off to the next flower. It was an amazing discovery so I decided to research them and do a sketch.

They flutter about from Alaska through the Northern Territories and also through most of the United States. (Edit: I’ve recently discovered they can also be found in England.) They enjoy sweet smelling and pale colored flowers especially honeysuckle, beebalm, phlox, and verbena. It drinks nectar through a proboscis (it’s long tongue). Because of it’s appearance and habits, it is often mistaken for a hummingbird.

I looked up the symbolism for a hummingbird moth but it was difficult to find. The moth symbolism in general was directed towards the nocturnal aspects of moths. Yet the hummingbird moth is diurnal, a day flyer! In that case, the moth totem would coincide with butterfly symbolism which represents transformation. Rapid changes in your life are about to happen to the point you will no longer be the same from when you started. Like the butterfly, it is best to accept it and have faith that life is leading you in the right direction. Worrying and fretting about it does not change the course of nature so it is best to allow nature to do it’s work. I also looked up the hummingbird totem which says to be flexible during rapid life changes. Stay positive and remember to enjoy the simple things. Open your heart up,  dream big, and make the most of your life!

HM Sketch

I guess I have some big changes coming my way! Well like I always say, go with the flow! I intend to do just that. I hope you enjoyed learning about the hummingbird moth. I was sure excited to!

What do you think about the hummingbird moth? Have you ever seen one before? Leave a comment below and share your thoughts! Thanks for reading!

Until next time,

“The significance of the moth is change. Caterpillar into chrysalis or pupa, from thence into beauty.”

I have never seen or even heard of these until today. I spotted one in the garden center at a Walmart. I was fascinated by it and took a short video. Then I looked into it what it was. I wound up driving to a hardware store a few blocks away after that, to look at some more plants, and sure enough, there was another hummingbird moth there fluttering about. 🤯

Yes spotted the hummingbird hawk moth in my own garden at least five times durring Aug/Sept of this year. It visited close to dusk yesterday eve as well as during the day. I live in Co Cork Ireland and I think its been migrating here from Europe since around 2008, a very frequent visitor with relatively high no’s recorded over that period of time. Its always around my verbena boneriensis, a beautiful sight, it flew in front of my nose yesterday to get to a flower and wasn’t a bit fazed that I was that close to it. A very welcome visitor to my corner of the world! Thank you for this post, very interesting, love the sketch! Many thanks, Fiona

It’s so fascinating hearing from people all over the world coming in contact with these beautiful critters. Especially because my initial research said they were only found in North America! So glad they are spanning the globe for all to enjoy! When I see them, they also seem to not mind me being near and just go about their business. “You do your thing and I’ll do mine.” They are always a joy to watch. Thank you so much for your kinds words and for sharing your story! I hope you have many more encounters!!

I live in Dorset UK and have one solitary hummingbird hawk moth which visits the beautiful purple Buddlea just outside my kitchen door each morning.
It uses its long tongue to suck nectar from deep within each tint perfect flower.
It hovers sups, then flies so fast in a straight line, stops abruptly at the next chosen floret.
They are amazing and magical and I am pondering what message it brings?
Chose something, delve deeply into it enjoy its sweetness and fragrance and move on. Is what comes to mind.
I love this blog, and all the posts, thanks for sharing.
I know these moths are fairly rare, the first time I saw one was over 30 years ago in my previous garden; I couldn’t believe my eyes, truly magical little beings. Thank you.

That would be so nice to have this visitor every morning! I moved a couple years ago so my new place doesn’t have much of a garden. I haven’t seen any in a couple years. I need to plant something that they enjoy!

That’s a great message that they have brought to you! Yes, they are very magical and such an honor to be visited by!

Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your story! I hope you continue to be visited by your little friend and dive deep into your next adventure!

I have an added characteristic of the hummingbird hawk moth.. They are Energy Sensitive creatures.. Meaning they will only visit areas tuned to their vibration.. They do not like dirty, cluttered areas, dont hang around power lines, haha.. To see them is special.. They are not attracted to all the different types of peops.. Lower energies they stay away from.

Great point! This is another reason why it is such an honor to have an encounter with these beautiful creatures! Many animals can sense things that most humans cannot. Many of us have lost our instinctual connection to the universe where as animals use it on a daily basis to survive and sense the world around us. This is why I have always admired the animal kingdom and try to learn from them every day. They are great teachers and even better judges of character. They deserve our respect on so many levels! Thank you for sharing such an important and interesting characteristic of the hummingbird moth!

I think transformation is fundamental to the moth, indeed. However, Let’s not forget that this is a special type of moth. It is reminiscent of the gold crest, another small hovering animal, native to southern England. I witnessed the gold crest flying into my life during a time when I was transforming. It was a painful time, but oh so important looking back on it. When Hummingbird spirit starts whispering in your ear, it wants you to remember to appreciate the sweet, simple things in life. Your inner life starts to blossom as Hummingbird directs you. Personally for me, this animal is reminding me to look for the simple small and pleasant things in life whilst taking on board a huge new adventure. I will need to tune into this delicate sweetness in the momentous months to come.

So true! What a great point! Thank you so much for sharing your story! It’s so important to enjoy the simple things in life. Just as we take joy from watching these beautiful creatures flutter by. Sometimes things tend to get very complicated and we may even complicate things ourselves. The best medicine can be just to quiet the mind, take a breath and enjoy what is right in front of us. Thanks again for sharing and I wish you the best of luck on your journey!

Thank you, Meg, for writing this. We just saw a hummingbird moth at dusk. It was flittimg around the flowers that my husband so carefully tends to and nurtures. Container gardening is his new passion. He’s only been dedicating himself to it these past 4 years. As he’s struggling with alcoholism I wonder if the visit is for him. ☀️I can only hope. ☀️If it’s for both of us, then what does transformation mean for me too? 🌻☀️🌻☀️

Gardening and working with nature is extremely therapeutic!! I love it! As far as a transformation for yourself, is there a hardship that you have been dealing with for a long time? Perhaps there will be closure there or a lesson learned within yourself. Or, if you have been trying to reach a certain goal, you might obtain what you’ve been working so hard to achieve. On the other hand, if you both saw the hummingbird moth together, perhaps you two will grow as a couple and experience a transformation in your relationship. Try to remember what you were thinking about when the hummingbird moth appeared to you and this can help determine what it’s personal message is for you! Thanks so much for sharing your story! I wish you and you husband all the best!!!

Thank you for your sharing input. This creature inspired me for a long time, it s already captured my heart shortly I move in south outside Phoenix in late summer 2009… It had captured my attention because it s so different and usual… it was so fast! People didnt see what I saw and even with my description. They dont believe me… later on I saw it again second time around north Phoenix in desert prickly pear fruit cactus area…. at that time I end up try to figure how to find name to get more information about this crearure. And the spiritual meaning as well few years ago. I have seen it from time to time. However yesterday, it s mindblowing because I didnt know it s fine during heavy raining even with some flashy thunder in early evening… I was like what? Really, so it doesnt hurt your wings, thinking ok maybe this one has no problem comparsion to others such as Moth etc. So my thinking continues, really??? No birds would fly like that. It was just out of blue. However I m grateful to see it visiting the Mexican Petunia flowers, like it s normal thing to do and also dance in the rain…
What your message have said matches that idea, for me to go through the progressive process regardless how this worldwide crisis has been. Now I m sharing mine with you and anyone who reads this as well.
        Thank you!!!

Thank you for writing this. I saw one a couple of days ago on the enchanting St Michaels Mount, Cornwall, England. It really made my trip even more magical. My son spotted it and neither if us had seen anything like it before! We spent a good 5 minutes in awe watching it flit from flower to flower. My photographs are terrible, (Just blurry blobs) but I managed to get a good little video. I saw one for the first time tonight! It is dark out, so I figured it was a hummingbird bird at night time? (Which is very odd to me!) I believe in totems and have been interested in looking up everything I come across. So I started typing humming bird into Google search, and “hummingbird MOTH” was suggested. And I found this blog. Thank you so much for posting this! My boyfriend and I are actually getting ready to buy a house, have aquired a dog who is in need of a good home, and are changing our careers. Lots of changes! And this totem just put all of that into perspective! Thank you so much 🙂 totems are real guys! I’m freaking out about all my new changes. And the moth just shows up? I called my friend to see it and were both totally mesmerised by it, collecting pollen, with its long black, straw type thing from the pink flowers on the front. Hi Meg!
First time my husband and I together saw this exquisite creature was yesterday, April 30, 2017. We were gardening and he saw it fly by me and thought it was a baby hummingbird. A few minutes later, the creature was back enjoying our flowers. We had a good ten minutes of wonder and awe! We have never seen anything like it and just decided to Google hummingbird moth and voila!
I was surprised Ted Andrews doesn’t include it in any of his books, but lucky to find some blogs, such as yours, that talk about the symbolism.
