Spirit Animal: Squirrel

They are always scurrying around… searching…gathering…preparing. Have you seen them? Red, grey, black or maybe even flying? In fact, there are over 200 different species of squirrels across the globe. If they have scurried across your path, they may have a very important message to share. When we pay attention to the squirrel’s greatest qualities, we realize there is much to learn in matters of:

  • Preparation
  • Safekeeping
  • Maneuverability
  • Persistance
  • Hyperactivity

Squirrel’s most powerful lesson to teach us is about preparing for the future. You’ve seen them running from here to there. Searching, gathering, stockpiling. This might be a good time for you to start doing the same. Collect food, money, tools, gadgets, whatever you think you might need for a rainy day. Tuck it away for later. You never know what might pop up; it’s better to be prepared than to get caught off guard. However, it could also be a sign to gather yourself spiritually, stockpile energy by meditating or finding peace within nature, for example. This kind of preparation is good for dealing with events or people that can be emotionally draining.

If you are going to be prepared for anything, you’ll need to make sure you have a place for safekeeping. Squirrels are passionate about more than just nuts. They are devoted caretakers to their homes. Their nest is their sanctuary. Food and resources are essential for survival, yes, but what good is any of it if you don’t have a safe place to retreat to. A squirrel’s nest will protect them from long, harsh winters and a variety of other dangers. You, too, need to ensure you have a safe place to go when the wind or possibly something else is nipping at your feet. Do you have a place to rest and recharge? …to feel grounded and protected? Create a place that brings you security when the world around you feels a little cold.

Have you noticed how quick and agile squirrels are? Their long tails help give them tremendous balance and their hind legs are exceptionally strong. They can maneuver with incredible speed and precision. These seemingly super powers are of body and mind. They apply quick problem solving to any given moment or situation. This ability is something we could all benefit from. Life is not a straight line and it can change as suddenly as a tornado. We need to be able to quickly adjust our course of action when things aren’t going as planned. There will always be hurdles popping up in our path but with swift thinking and coordination we can continue over them with momentum rather than getting caught up and tangled.

One trait that can sometimes be entertaining to witness is a squirrel’s persistence. Have you seen those videos of people trying to come up with intricate ways to keep the squirrels out of the birdfeeders? Yet, no matter how elaborate of a contraption they make, the squirrel always seems to find a way to the feeder. They will look down right ridiculous scrambling, trying to get that yummy snack. It doesn’t matter. They will not give up! Now, imagine if we took that same tenacity and applied it to our own obstacles. We could be unstoppable!

Everyone is familiar with the hyperactivity of squirrel energy. Have you been feeling it lately? Does it fill you with motivation or are you overwhelmed? Do you feel like your mind is disorganized and scattered or do you feel like everything is aligning perfectly and propelling you forward? Depending on what side of the spectrum you are on will help you determine what squirrel is trying to teach you. Are there parts of your life where you feel on point, ready to take action in a moments notice? What areas need more attention and organization?

Make sure you are prepared before you take your next leap. With this wisdom behind you, you can confidently reach that branch every time.

So much to learn from an often overlooked creature. Thanks for reading! I hope the squirrel was able to give you the insight you were looking for.

Be persistent, free spirits!

“People look at me like I’m a little strange, when I go around talking to squirrels and rabbits and stuff. That’s ok. That’s just ok.” – Bob Ross

Awesome artwork! I love the colors you chose. It would be a cool print on an apron for a Father’s Day gift to a dad that likes to grill.
And, there is nothing crazy about talking to the squirrels, and the birds, and the trees, etc., etc., I do it all the time.

The animals are better listeners anyways! And better company! 😉
